Rachel Noble, Lillian Daughety and Melissa Espino

Three outstanding students from Lenoir County Public Schools are proving that hard work, leadership, and academic excellence open doors to incredible opportunities. South Lenoir High School’s Rachel Noble, as well as North Lenoir High School’s Lilli Daughety and Melissa Espino, have earned some of North Carolina’s most prestigious merit scholarships, setting them on a path toward bright futures at NC State University.

Rachel Noble, a standout scholar and leader, has been named a recipient of the Park Scholarship, an elite program recognizing only 40 of North Carolina’s top students each year for their academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to service. Rachel’s passion for agriculture, starting on her family’s Christmas tree farm, has fueled her goal of becoming an agricultural lawyer. Through Future Farmers of America (FFA) and dual enrollment at Lenoir Community College, she has built a strong foundation for success.

Joining her in the winner’s circle are Lilli Daughety and Melissa Espino, both of whom have been awarded the Goodnight Scholarship, a full-ride, four-year award given to only 100 high-achieving STEM students across the state. These achievements mark a historic milestone for North Lenoir High School, as it is the first time two students from the school have earned the Goodnight Scholarship in the same year.

Lilli, a senior at North Lenoir High School, has demonstrated resilience and leadership throughout her high school career. In addition to excelling academically and earning an associate’s degree alongside her diploma, she founded the LeadHERship Club, which empowers young women through community service. She aspires to become an orthodontist and hopes to return to her hometown to give back to the Kinston community.

Melissa Espino, also a North Lenoir senior, is a student leader with a passion for agriculture and veterinary science. As president of her school’s FFA chapter and the Southeast Regional FFA, she has inspired students across the region. Her experience raising and caring for animals has shaped her career goal of becoming a veterinarian. With a rigorous academic background—including AP and dual enrollment courses—Melissa is well-prepared for the next step in her education.

“These young women exemplify the dedication, perseverance, and leadership that define Lenoir County Public Schools,” said Public Information Officer, Rebecca McGann. “We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and can’t wait to see the impact they will make at NC State and beyond.”
